🌻 Our Mission 🌻
At the Sunflower Community Care Farm, our mission is to create a safe, happy, calm, and nurturing environment where everyone feels valued.
We support adults with mental health challenges, such as anxiety or depression, and those with disabilities to:
- Engage in purposeful, hands-on activities
- Connect with animals in a positive, non-judgmental way
- Take part in growing, nurturing, and harvesting fruits and vegetables
All activities are carried out with care for the environment and consideration for others.
🌿 What is Care Farming?
“Care farming” is the therapeutic use of farming practices. Farms provide health, social, and educational support for vulnerable groups. While it is a growing movement in the UK, care farming is not new — successful projects were running as early as the 1940s, helping adults and children from urban residential care to rehabilitate in rural environments.
🌱 Why Care Farming Matters
Health and social challenges, including disabilities, depression, obesity, and the needs of disaffected young people, place pressure on health, social care, and education services. Care farming offers a win-win for both people and the farming sector by:
- Supporting individuals to build confidence and participate in meaningful activity
- Developing employment and life skills
- Offering evidence of positive outcomes for mental health and wellbeing
- Boosting the economic viability of farms and benefiting the local community
💛 Evidence of Impact
Research, including the University of Essex study ‘Care Farming in the UK’ (Hine, Peacock & Pretty, 2008), shows:
- Participating in care farm activities enhances mood and self-esteem
- Care farming reduces anger, confusion, depression, tension, and fatigue, while increasing energy and activity levels
🌿 Why It Works
Caring for plants and animals provides responsibility, achievement, and purpose in a non-threatening environment — because plants and animals don’t judge, they offer a safe space to grow, recover, and flourish.
Care farming is a proven, enjoyable, and therapeutic way for people to feel better, learn new skills, and reconnect with nature and community.
